Recently, I started learning more about startups and last week I had the opportunity to listen in on some internal meetings for a new company that’s being formed. During this process, I was asked to help out with a couple of things, including working to help build out the application screens and workflow of the company. Here are a few things that I've learned so far.
Brainstorming
My ideas always come to me at the most random times, or when I really need something that doesn't exist. My dad always tells me that when I have an idea, I should roll with it and see what I can do with it. Think about what you can do with your idea, is it an app or a product? How is it different from something similar? It is important to ask yourself these questions because they can help further develop your idea. As I listened to these calls, I could tell that my perspective was different to the others on the call, I am the youngest person on the team, and ironically these new companies are targeting people in my age group. Thus, I'm trying to work out how to channel the thoughts I have into ideas and suggestions, and in ways I can teach the other stakeholders on these calls. I'm finding it’s not just about having an idea, it’s all about how you introduce it to the team and explain it in a way that you know they understand it.
How Ideas Come Together
It is so helpful to talk to other people and get their opinions on your idea. When the company I have been working with first told me and my dad their idea, we had so many questions and thoughts on how they could make it easier or more efficient. My next challenge is to work out ways that I can explain the ideas, and it appears a portion of this will be based on building diagrams and illustrations to help explain my concepts.
What You Need To Be Doing To Start To Formulate
Moving from an idea to a product or service is where the rubber meets the road! In this case it was talking about how an Mobile App would work. Of course I was thinking about the screen design, and I was not thinking about all the screens that are needed to have a working system. It’s not just how you log in, but what happens, when you forget your password, what about the user, what type of questions do you ask a new user, oh, and how do you make sure you don’t ask too many questions and lose people before they even get to see your application.
During the call, we started talking about what screens we need to make it work, and we talked about the process of how the user would use the product.
I left the call with some action items, which I'm working on. I will share my progress over the next month or so.
